Meeting Lives -2 : Bihar Floods
Assumption : "Bihar flood is old news and we have done our bit by donation clothes/money. Things must have been better now"
Reality : "Things get worse few weeks after the calamity. Lots of water , no work , insufficient medicine and almost on the verge of various epidemics"
I attended a meeting called by GOONJ(Delhi based NGO working in Bihar ), Anshu Gupta,the founder of GOONJ has been executing relief work in Bihar and had seen situations himself. It was real eye opening details which we people in cities are totally unaware of. We base our impression on media typically and hence don't get to see the real scene.
He is writing a detailed write-up , here are few points
1. People in Govt Relief Camps get food once @ day , 1st food starts at 1 pm . Till then nothing .
2. How about starting a day without tea / coffee ? Its weeks now they are living that way.
3. Most of the people haven't changed dress from last 3-4 weeks. You can see all kind of skin problems there.
4 Above is true for women also. They are managing through unhygienic way/used cloths for their monthly needs.
5. Boat people are charging 2-5 thousands per person to take people to safe area. Govt boats are not reaching all places and number is insufficient.
6. Local hospitals are managing with very very few doctors.

1. A Sarpanch "pappu" found a threat with rising water in local water body , came up with a quick plan , gathered 250 people and repaired it locally without
waiting for Got help. Thus saved his village.
2. A Registered medical practitioner Lallan , he has been given a boat and salary of 3000 per month , He roams around in boat and treat almost 250 people per day
FREE of cost.
3. Another person ( forgot name ) had installed a small camp where all people coming from distant places for rescue were given big glass of local refresshing drink
( sattu based ) FREE . He exhauseted full of his personal ration on this.
4. NGOs like GOONJ is trying and planning long term programs.
